A specialist in American Jewish history, Korn first published the book in 1951 with the Jewish Publication Society of America; later editions include an introduction by Allan Nevins.

The book examines the Jewish community in the United States during the Civil War as a community, rather than as a roll of individual soldiers. It treats American Jewry on the eve of the conflict, the division of rabbis and congregations over slavery and secession, Jewish life on the Union and Confederate home fronts, the fight to secure Jewish military chaplains, and Abraham Lincoln’s dealings with Jewish citizens and petitioners. A central section reconstructs General Ulysses S. Grant’s General Order No. 11 of 1862, which expelled Jews as a class from his military department, and the protests that led to its revocation. Korn also surveys wartime charges against Jewish slave traders and the wider climate of prejudice in both sections.

Sovereign Archive Publishing is proud to offer this well sourced account of Jewish life in the divided republic. American Jewry and the Civil War remains one of the few readings of American Jewish history during the period.

Number of Pages: 412

Dimensions: 0.98 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: January 12, 2009

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0711/4516/0886/files/5ED035D4-6039-412D-9016-D55956694C54.jpg?v=1791488641
