Behind Communism by Frank L. Britton is a 1952 examination of the origins and leadership of the Communist movement, arguing that any honest account must confront the Jewish question. Britton contends that the founders of Russian Communism were overwhelmingly Jewish, that the top ranks of the American Communist Party (including many of the era’s convicted spies) were of the same background, and that these facts of history have been systematically suppressed. Beginning with a critique of the “persecution myth,” he traces Jewish history in Europe—expulsions, commercial roles, the Pale of Settlement, and relations with the Tsars—before turning to the emergence of Marxism, the 1905 and 1917 revolutions, Trotsky’s ascent, the Red Terror, and the export of revolution.

The book then shifts to the United States, documenting Jewish predominance in the Communist Party, atomic espionage cases, and what Britton terms the “Kosher Valley” of Hollywood. Illustrated throughout with photographs of key figures, it presents Communism not as a simple program of economic redistribution but as a movement whose planners, organizers, and financial backers were, in Britton’s view, disproportionately and decisively Jewish. Written in the early Cold War years, the work remains a concise, unapologetic statement of the thesis that Communism and Judaism are historically intertwined.
