by Giovanni Gentile (Author)

Origins and Doctrine of Fascism: With Selections from Other Works is a collection of writings by Giovanni Gentile (1875–1944), the Italian philosopher who served as the principal theorist of Italian Fascism. A professor of philosophy at Naples, Palermo, Pisa, and Rome, Gentile developed the system known as actual idealism. He was Minister of Public Instruction in Mussolini’s first cabinet (1922–1924) and the first president of the National Fascist Institute of Culture. This English volume, translated and edited by A. James Gregor, gathers key texts Gentile wrote shortly before and after the Fascist seizure of power.
The book opens with the full text of Origins and Doctrine of Fascism (1929), in which Gentile traces the movement to Italy’s intervention in the First World War and sets out its doctrine of the ethical state, national community, and the rejection of liberalism and Marxism. It continues with selections from What Is Fascism? and from the revised 1919 edition of The Reform of Education, which link Gentile’s educational philosophy to the political order he later defended. Together the pieces present fascism as a developmental dictatorship rooted in idealism, nationalism, and the call to discipline, work, and sacrifice.
Sovereign Archive Publishing is proud to offer this primary collection of the theory that justified Italian Fascism. Origins and Doctrine of Fascism remains essential reading for those studying interwar political thought, the intellectual origins of fascism, and the philosophy of Giovanni Gentile. This volume makes available some of his more signify cant writings produced shortly before and after the Fascist accession to power in Italy.
