The Communist Manifesto is a short political pamphlet written by Karl Marx (1818–1883) and Friedrich Engels (1820–1895). Marx was a German philosopher, economist, journalist, and revolutionary thinker who developed the theory of historical materialism. Engels, also German, was a businessman, social scientist, and close collaborator who supported Marx financially and co-authored several key works. The Manifesto was originally published in London in February 1848 as the platform of the Communist League.
The document opens with the famous line “A spectre is haunting Europe—the spectre of communism” and presents a concise analysis of class struggle as the driving force of history. It examines the rise and development of the bourgeoisie, the formation and revolutionary role of the proletariat, a critique of existing socialist and communist literature, and the immediate demands and aims of the communist movement. The work argues that capitalism contains the seeds of its own destruction and calls for the overthrow of bourgeois society through proletarian revolution, culminating in the establishment of a classless communist society.
A foundational primary source of modern communist thought, The Communist Manifesto remains one of the most influential political documents in history for readers interested in 19th-century political theory, socialist ideology, and the development of Marxist ideas.
