by A. James Gregor (Author)
Giovanni Gentile: Philosopher of Fascism is a study by A. James Gregor (1929–2019), the American political scientist and specialist in Italian Fascism who taught at the University of California, Berkeley. A longtime interpreter of Gentile’s actualism, Gregor published this volume with Transaction Publishers in 2001 as a concise account of the man he regarded as the principal theorist of the Fascist regime.
The book traces Gentile’s life from his Sicilian birth and philosophical training at Pisa through his years as a university professor, Minister of Public Instruction, and ideological spokesman for Mussolini. It sets out the background of his neo-Hegelian actualism, his political philosophy of the ethical state, and his relations with Marxism, nationalism, and the Fascist movement. Gregor argues that Gentile supplied Fascism its justificatory rationale as a developmental dictatorship for a late-unifying, industrially backward nation, and he examines the place of race in Gentile’s later thought. The study closes by treating Gentile’s doctrine as a model for anti-democratic responses among status-deprived nations.
Sovereign Archive Publishing is proud to offer this standard introduction to the philosopher of Italian Fascism. Giovanni Gentile: Philosopher of Fascism remains essential reading for those studying interwar political thought, the intellectual origins of Fascism, and the work of A. James Gregor.
