Men Among the Ruins: Postwar Reflections of a Radical Traditionalist is a postwar political work by Julius Evola (1898–1974), the Italian philosopher, esotericist, and critic of modernity. Written after the Second World War, when Evola was living in Rome and reflecting on the collapse of the interwar order, it was first published in Italian in 1953 and later appeared in English translation. It continues the traditionalist outlook of Revolt Against the Modern World into the conditions of the mid-twentieth century.
The book examines the ruins of postwar Europe and the forces Evola held responsible for them: democracy, liberalism, communism, Americanism, and the leveling of hierarchy. It treats the state, elites, the organic idea of the nation, the decline of the warrior and aristocratic principles, and the problem of action for those who reject the modern political order. Evola argues that a traditional elite should remain standing amid the wreckage rather than adapt to mass society, and he distinguishes his position from both party politics and simple nostalgia for the recent past.
Sovereign Archive Publishing is proud to offer this central postwar text of radical traditionalism. Men Among the Ruins remains essential reading for those studying Traditionalist philosophy, critiques of modern politics, and the later thought of Julius Evola.
