by Paul L. Moorcraft (Author), Peter McLaughlin (Author)

  • The Rhodesian War is a military history by Paul L. Moorcraft, a British war correspondent, historian, and director of the Centre for Foreign Policy Analysis in London, written with Peter McLaughlin, who lived in Rhodesia and Zimbabwe from 1956 to 1983. Moorcraft has reported from more than twenty conflicts and is the author of numerous books on war and foreign policy. The work first appeared in the early 1980s and has been reissued in later editions.
  • The book covers the military history of Southern Rhodesia from the first resistance to colonial rule in the 1890s through the Unilateral Declaration of Independence under Ian Smith and the bush war of 1965–1979, ending with the Lancaster House agreement that transferred power. It examines the organization, strategy, and tactics of the Rhodesian security forces and the nationalist guerrilla armies, including external raids, counterinsurgency operations, sanctions, and the shift from a period in which the security forces were winning most engagements to a political settlement. The authors also treat the conduct of both sides and the war’s aftermath under Robert Mugabe.
  • Sovereign Archive Publishing is proud to offer this standard account of a major late-twentieth-century counterinsurgency. The Rhodesian War remains essential reading for those studying the Rhodesian Bush War, African decolonization, and the military and political end of white-minority rule in Southern Rhodesia.
